Softonic review

A player optimized for feature length movies

What makes you choose a video player over another one? In my opinion, the application needs to open up any video file, be easy to use and offer good support for subtitles. Chroma Player fills all three conditions.

The video player includes built-in codecs for DivX, XviD and MPEG4 and lets you install free third party plugins to play other file types like WMV or h264. Chroma Player also offers support for other audio and container codecs.

In terms of subtitles, you'll find the program can read most file formats, including SubRip, SubViewer and MPL2.

I enjoyed video playback with Chroma and liked the movie settings, which let you adjust details like contrast, sharpness and play around with the sound equalizer. You can also set when subtitles kick in, although that is not as easy as it seems.

Obviously it's a shame that Chroma Player isn't free, considering that there are other excellent video players for Mac that you won't need to spend a penny on. My other pet peeve with Chroma is that settings do seem to be a little hidden away.

Although it could be a little easier to use, Chroma Player offers great codec and subtitle support and is an excellent video player for Mac.

PROS

  • Supports lots of codecs
  • Subtitle file support
  • Simple movie settings

CONS

  • Not free
